One month later...

and I still got nothing.

Ok, my students took a semester exam last week. I'll copy and paste a few questions from it to see how you stack up against 6th graders.

1. List 13 punctuation marks used in English. Special thumbs up to Hrbek who got all 13 without googling it.

DEFINE THE FOLLOWING:

Noun -
Verb -
Adjective -
Pronoun -

SOME WORDS CAN BE NOUNS, ADJECTIVES OR VERBS. SELECT THE ITALICIZED WORD THAT IS BEING USED AS AN ADJECTIVE IN THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES:

2. The water barrel was full of water.
3. I can make apple pie from cut up apple.

FIND THE ANTECEDENT FOR EACH ITALICIZED PRONOUN:

4. Thomas hit the ball and he ran to first base.
5. The kids saw the girl and they ran to play with her.

IDENTIFY THE ITALICIZED VERB AS AUXILIARY, LINKING, TRANSITIVE OR INTRANSITIVE.

6. Thomas hit the ball.
7. The girl is pretty.
8. I think I will call the girl today.
9. The camper's hid from the bear.

FIND THE SUBJECT FOR EACH ITALICIZED VERB.

10. Watch your step.
11. The little boy ate the candy bar.
12. There are three strawberries in the basket.

Good luck. Keep your eyes on your own test.

Why is it useful for kids to be able to list 13 punctuation marks?

kids should know the dash and ellipsis ... useful for their run-on thoughts -- and commas, too.

A noun's a special kind of word,
It's any name you ever heard,
I find it quite interesting,
A noun's a person, place, or thing.

I get my thing in action (Verb!)
In being, (Verb!) In doing, (Verb!)
In saying
A verb expresses action, being, or state of being. A verb makes a statement. Yeah, a verb tells it like it is!

Adjectives are words you use to really describe things,
Handy words to carry around.
Days are sunny or they're rainy
Boys are dumb or else they're brainy
Adjectives can show you which way.

You see a pronoun was made to take the place of a noun,
'Cause saying all those nouns over and over
Can really wear you down.

//
2. 1st water
3. 1st apple
//
4. Thomas
5. The kids
//
6. trannie
7. linker
8. aux (helper verb, right?)
9. I THINK intrannie since you dont need the bear to be grammatical -- and lose the apostrophe unless u want to get fired
//
10. YOU, implied
11. Little boy
12. 3 strawberries I think
